Columba Leadership: A Bright Light for South Africa’s Youth on World Youth Skills Day

On this World Youth Skills Day, Columba Leadership celebrates the remarkable journey of South Africa’s young people whose lives have been transformed by education, leadership and steadfast support. Guided by CEO Tracy Hackland, Columba Leadership continues to serve as a powerful catalyst nurturing the potential and aspirations of thousands of learners nationwide.
The inspiring story behind Columba Leadership’s Class of 2024 speaks volumes. Ninety-five percent of learners remained in school, either progressing to matric or continuing in a lower grade, highlighting Columba’s commitment to keeping hope and opportunity alive.
Of those who wrote matric, an impressive ninety-four percent passed, significantly surpassing the national pass average of 87.3 percent. Notably, eighty-seven percent achieved a Bachelor’s or Diploma pass, well above the national average of 74.6 percent, unlocking pathways to further education and promising futures.
Leadership development is central to Columba’s mission. Seventy-four percent of their learners held formal school leadership positions during the past year. This emphasis underpins the organisation’s belief that real leadership grows through opportunity, encouragement and belief, nurturing not only knowledge but also confidence and character that will serve learners for life. In addition, by engaging youth as leaders in social action projects, they develop foundational capabilities that can stand them in good stead to succeed at school and in their lives post school.
Tracking the journeys beyond school, Columba proudly reports that 46 percent of the 69 percent of learners they could trace are now pursuing further studies. This is a testament to the lasting impact of mentorship and empowerment.
