At Columba Leadership, we believe that young people have the power to transform their communities by addressing the pressing issue of food insecurity. On this World Hunger Day, we highlight the inspiring work of youth leaders who are taking bold steps to ensure that everyone has access to nutritious food.

Across South Africa, Columba leaders are stepping up to design and implement social action projects that make a real difference. These initiatives are not just about providing immediate relief—they are about building sustainable solutions and empowering communities to take control of their own food futures.

A shining example is the partnership between Asisthuthuke Combined School and Shea O’Connor Combined School. Recently, youth leaders from both schools came together for a dynamic planning session hosted by the Youth Environmental Advocacy Team. This gathering was a space for learning, sharing ideas, and sparking new energy around tackling food insecurity and environmental challenges. The discussion focused on critical areas such as food security, environmental education, access to clean water, and overall wellbeing—all key priorities of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

From this collaboration, a meaningful project has emerged: the creation of a shared vegetable garden at the Mandela Capture Site. This garden is more than just a source of fresh food—it is a place for hands-on learning, environmental awareness, and building stronger ties between the schools and the wider community.

Youth leaders from Asisthuthuke Combined School and Shea O’Connor Combined School are demonstrating what it means to lead with purpose and compassion. By tackling food insecurity together, they are not only addressing immediate needs but also laying the groundwork for a healthier, more sustainable future.

On World Hunger Day 2025, we celebrate the dedication and vision of these young changemakers. Their work reminds us that ending hunger requires collective action, creativity, and the courage to lead by example.
